Navigating Health, Building Confidence: How Newcomer Connections Supports Wellness
For many newcomers, arriving in Canada is filled with hope, opportunity, and the excitement of a fresh start. But navigating an unfamiliar healthcare system can quickly become overwhelming. Questions like ‘Where do I go?’ or ‘What services am I eligible for?’ often arise during a time when stability and reassurance matter most. For many newcomers, even booking a medical appointment or walking into a hospital can feel intimidating.
At YMCA Newcomer Connections, we believe no newcomer should have to navigate those challenges alone. Therefore, a dedicated health team made up of Health Liaisons, Health Navigators, and Complex Case Workers who walk alongside clients every step of the way. From post-arrival health assessments to ongoing medical follow-ups, the team helps identify urgent concerns while ensuring clients understand how to access the care they need.
The YMCA Newcomer Connections work goes far beyond coordination. It is about building confidence, trust, and independence.
Our Health Navigators assist in this journey by addressing language barriers and limited access to medical records. They help bridge that gap by guiding clients through medical appointments by helping set expectations and resulting in a better understanding of the Canadian healthcare system. From Medicare registration and joining family physician waitlists, to defining when to visit a pharmacy, urgent care clinic, or emergency room, clients are empowered with knowledge that helps them make informed decisions about their health.
By connecting clients to the right services at the right time, our team not only supports newcomers but also helps reduce pressure on the broader healthcare system.
Truth is, without valued and committed partners, this work couldn’t be done successfully.
Through collaboration with Horizon Health Network and St. Joseph’s Community Health Centre / Saint John Uptown Health Centre, newcomers and refugees receive Post-Arrival Health Assessments and along with Public Health and Infectious Disease immediate healthcare needs, including vaccinations and urgent follow-up care are addressed.
Valley Healthcare, provide their services to newcomers at our YMCA site, where interpretation services are available. Prenatal education sessions and support for expectant mothers is supported by the Pregnancy Resource Centre of Saint John, helping them feel informed and less isolated during an especially vulnerable time.
In addition, partnerships with organizations such as High Tech Family Dentistry help ensure urgent dental care remains within reach and through Just Us Counselling, newcomers are connected to accessible counselling services, including support available in Arabic, playing a critical role in improving access to culturally responsive care for newcomer families.
Together, these partnerships create a network of care that extends far beyond a single service. We are deeply grateful for the strong partnerships that help make this support possible.
Within our own spaces, we continue to expand opportunities for wellness through educational workshops, YMCA programs that encourage movement and social connection, and initiatives like self-serve blood pressure monitoring stations that empower clients to take an active role in their health journey.
Beyond direct client support, our team also advocates for newcomer health and wellness across the region by participating in the Saint John Local Immigration Partnership health work, local Health Advisory groups, and community discussions shaping the future of healthcare. Most recently, we contributed to Horizon Health’s Community Health Needs Assessment and conversations surrounding the expansion of the North End Wellness Centre clinic, helping ensure newcomer voices are reflected in community planning and healthcare development.
The true impact of this work goes far beyond appointments and services. When newcomers receive the right support, uncertainty begins to turn into confidence. Clients grow more comfortable asking questions, navigating appointments on their own, and advocating for their health needs. What once felt overwhelming becomes easier to manage, and feelings of isolation are replaced with connection and support.
At the Y, we believe health is more than a service, it is a pathway to belonging, confidence, and a stronger future.
