Volunteer Spotlight: Ken Szeto

Volunteer Spotlight: Ken Szeto

At the YMCA, we believe that every person has a story — and some stories inspire us in the most powerful ways. Today, we’re honored to shine a light on one of our most dedicated and deeply valued volunteers, Ken Szeto.

Ken’s early life wasn’t easy. Faced with challenges that no child should have to endure, he grew up learning to rely on his own strength and resourcefulness. But instead of becoming hardened by those experiences, Ken turned them into a deep well of empathy, resilience, and compassion for others.

Since moving to Saint John with his wife Elaine seven years ago, Ken has become a treasured part of our YMCA family. From the moment he walked through our doors, he brought not only a passion for helping others but also a warmth and joy that lifts the spirits of everyone around him.

Whether he’s leading high-energy Aquafit classes with music he personally curates, teaching swimming lessons with patience and care, stepping in as a lifeguard, or volunteering behind the scenes fixing tech for newcomers and painting walls in our daycare hub — Ken gives his time and heart to every role he takes on.

At 61, he continues to challenge himself by gaining new skills and certifications. He’s living proof that it’s never too late to learn, grow, and make a difference.

But what makes Ken truly special isn’t just what he does — it’s how he does it. He makes people feel seen, heard, and valued. He’s quick with a smile, generous with his time, and always ready with a kind word or a helping hand. For many in our community, Ken has become not just a volunteer — but a friend, a mentor, and a bright light of positivity.

We are proud to celebrate Ken’s contributions and thrilled to congratulate him on receiving the King Charles III Coronation Medal — a prestigious honour awarded to those who have made exceptional contributions to their communities.

Ken, thank you for all that you do. You’ve shown us what it means to overcome, to serve, and to truly belong. We’re so grateful to have you as part of our Y family.
