Three Organizations in Southwestern New Brunswick Recognized as Newcomer Employment Champions at YMCA Awards Breakfast
Saint John, NB — The YMCA of Southwestern New Brunswick’s Newcomer Connections proudly hosted the third annual Newcomer Employment Champions (NEC) Awards on Friday, February 21, at the Crowne Plaza. This inspiring breakfast event brought together community leaders, employers, and supporters to celebrate organizations that have gone above and beyond in fostering inclusive workplaces for newcomers.
“We are so proud to recognize employers who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to hiring and supporting newcomers in our community,” said Samah El Maghlawy, General Manager of YMCA Newcomer Connections. “By creating more inclusive workplaces, these organizations are not only strengthening their teams but also contributing to a thriving, diverse community in Southwestern New Brunswick.”
To honor their dedication to best practices in newcomer employment, nine organizations were nominated across three Newcomer Employment Champions (NEC) Awards categories. The 2025 award winners were Horizon Health Network, Kindred Home Care, and Crosby Foods Ltd. A volunteer selection committee evaluated each nominee and selected the winners based on their impact and initiatives.
Horizon Health Network was awarded the NEC Advocacy Award for its outstanding community engagement, seamless integration practices, and strong settlement support for newcomer employees. The organization has actively worked to create an inclusive environment by fostering mentorship programs, providing cultural competency training, and ensuring access to vital resources for internationally trained professionals.
Kindred Home Care received the NEC Engagement Award for its commitment to fostering workplace inclusivity by referring employees to settlement resources, supporting language learning, and providing continuous training to ensure effective communication within their teams. Their proactive approach to supporting newcomers has created an environment where employees feel valued and empowered to succeed.
Crosby Foods Ltd. was named the NEC Employer of Choice for its exceptional efforts in celebrating newcomers’ milestones, offering spousal and family support, and training supervisors to enhance workplace integration. The company has also led by example, encouraging other employers to implement similar newcomer-friendly initiatives, strengthening the broader employment landscape.
“The YMCA is committed to fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment where newcomers can thrive,” said Shilo Boucher, President & CEO of YMCA of Southwestern New Brunswick. “The organizations recognized today serve as examples of how workplaces can embrace diversity and champion opportunities for all. We are grateful to work alongside such dedicated employers and look forward to growing these partnerships.”
The NEC program, funded by Working NB and initially developed by the Saint John Local Immigration Partnership (SJLIP), continues to be instrumental in equipping employers with the tools and knowledge needed to integrate newcomers into their workforce successfully. Since its inception, 82 organizations have participated in the program, with even more expressing interest following this year’s event.
“The Newcomer Employment Champions (NEC) program exemplifies the power of collaboration in supporting newcomers and strengthening our workforce,” said Kathryn Melvin, Project Manager, Saint John Local Immigration Partnership. “By working together, we are creating long-term solutions that benefit both newcomers and local businesses.”
