Taliya’s Journey: Small Steps, Big Strength

Every time eight-year-old Taliya Engalls walks through the doors of the YMCA at the Irving Oil Field House in Saint John, New Brunswick, she brings something special with her: a bright smile, a determined spirit, and a story that continues to inspire everyone around her.

Born with Down syndrome and cerebral palsy after a stroke in utero, Taliya faced significant challenges from the very beginning. She was unable to hold her own weight as an infant and underwent open-heart surgery at just six months old. Early on, even basic movements like sitting up or holding an object felt uncertain, but Taliya’s journey has never been defined by limitations.

Through years of physiotherapy and unwavering support from her family, Taliya began to make remarkable progress. What once took immense effort – lifting her body, finding balance, taking a step – gradually became possible. Today, Taliya can walk, crawl, and run on her own.

“When I saw her walk for the first time, the emotions were just out of this world. I told myself from the beginning that, ‘Nobody’s going to tell my little girl what she can’t do’”, recounts Mark Engalls, Taliya’s father.

One of her most powerful moments came on her very first day of school, when she walked independently through the doors; a milestone that once felt far out of reach.

“She works so hard, you can see her determination. Taliya is feisty and wants to do things on her own. There were times when she would cry for, maybe 30 seconds, but she still wanted to keep going. She always has a smile and is very loving and affectionate. She’s a blessing.”, Mark says.

What began as a place for therapy and movement quickly became something more. By making use of the YMCA at the Irving Oil Fieldhouse indoor track, open space, and accessible environment, Taliya has been able to practice her exercises, build strength, and gain confidence.

“Her story is what the Y is all about. This facility has made such a difference, and she wouldn’t be where she is today without it”, Mark states with gratitude.

Just as important as the facility itself, are the people inside it. From staff to members, Taliya is surrounded by encouragement every time she visits. She is known by name, greeted with smiles, and supported by a community that celebrates her progress.

“She has a whole fan club here,” her father shares.

That sense of belonging has helped Taliya flourish, not only physically, but emotionally.

Whether she’s walking the track, listening to music, or greeting friends with her signature smile, Taliya’s presence is a reminder of the power of perseverance and the impact of a caring community.

“Taliya,” her father calls out to her, “Are you a superstar?”

“Yes!” she replies, as her face lights up with a smile and she claps her hands together excitedly.

Her journey is far from over, but every step she takes is a testament to what can happen when determination meets support.

At the YMCA, stories like Taliya’s come to life every day. Stories of strength, connection, and possibility.
