Building Pathways to Inclusive Employment

Meet Ngozi, a dedicated supervisor with the YMCA’s Newcomer Connections team who is passionate about creating pathways to opportunity for newcomers in our community. Ngozi believes employment is more than just finding a job. It represents confidence, independence, and a sense of belonging.

Every day, she supports newcomers as they navigate the Canadian workforce, helping them build skills, understand workplace expectations, and connect with meaningful employment opportunities.

In her role, Ngozi supervises key employment initiatives, including Sector-Specific Employment Language Training (SSELT) programs and the Newcomer Employment Champions (NEC) initiative. Through this work, she helps bridge the gap between newcomer talent and local workforce needs.

Through SSET programs, newcomers receive targeted training aligned with in-demand industries. Participants strengthen their technical knowledge, workplace communication skills, and understanding of Canadian workplace culture. Ngozi works closely with her team to ensure individuals feel supported throughout their journey. She understands that many newcomers are rebuilding their careers while adjusting to a new country, and her leadership focuses on encouragement, practical guidance, and creating welcoming learning environments where participants can grow with confidence.

Ngozi is also actively working with the NEC Team to expand the reach of the Newcomer Employment Champions (NEC) program. NEC recognizes employers who demonstrate leadership in inclusive hiring and workplace practices. She believes meaningful integration happens when employers and communities work together. By engaging more organizations in NEC, Ngozi is helping create broader opportunities for newcomers while promoting inclusive workforce practices across sectors.

Through her work with SSELT and NEC, Ngozi contributes to the YMCA’s mission of building healthy communities where everyone belongs. Her dedication helps ensure newcomers are not only prepared for employment, but welcomed into workplaces where they can thrive.

The YMCA of Southwestern New Brunswick is a charity dedicated to building healthy, connected communities where everyone belongs. Through health and wellness, newcomer support, child and youth development, and community programs, we remove barriers, stand against racism and exclusion, and ensure people of all backgrounds have the opportunity to reach their full potential.
