Shining a Light on Inclusion

Wiktoria Cegielska’s journey with the Y began in 2023 through the Y Ignite program, where she had the opportunity to learn, grow, and connect. From the very beginning, one thing stood out: her deep care for people and her belief in the power of inclusion.

As a Client Intake Liaison and Newcomer Support Worker, Wiktoria is often one of the first point of contact for newcomers entering The Y. She welcomes them, listens to their stories, helps identify their needs, and connects them with programs and supports that can help them build a new life in their community.

Beyond her role, Wiktoria saw an opportunity to strengthen how we support 2SLGBTQIA+ newcomers within our services. Recognizing that visibility, understanding, and respect start from within. She took the initiative to design and lead a staff awareness workshop for our Settlement Team, focused on 2SLGBTQIA+ identities, with particular attention to trans and non-binary individuals.

Her workshop created space for learning, reflection, and honest conversation. It helped staff build confidence in how they engage with 2SLGBTQIA+ newcomers, understand the importance of inclusive language, and recognize how small actions can make a big difference in creating safety and belonging. Most importantly, it reminded the team that inclusion is not a one-time conversation, it’s an ongoing commitment.

Wiktoria’s leadership in this space reflects the YMCA’s values in action. By empowering staff with knowledge and awareness, she is helping ensure that 2SLGBTQIA+ members feel seen, supported, and welcomed, not just in words, but in practice.

Her journey is an example of what happens when passion meets opportunity. With encouragement from her team and leaders, Wiktoria has turned an idea into reality, one that continues to grow and expand across the Y. Through her work, she is helping unlock potential, strengthen belonging, and create spaces where everyone can truly shine.
