Healthy Living Initiative Programs

HealthY Mobility Program

The HealthY Mobility Program (HMP) is a 12-week program designed for anyone with limited mobility in their hips, knees, or ankles due to a chronic disease (e.g., arthritis) or debilitating injury.

  • The HMP will take place at the YMCA Southwestern NB’s regional centre at 191 Churchill Blvd., Saint John, NB.
  • The program will accept physician and other allied health care practitioners’ referrals. Self-referrals will also be accepted.
  • Participants will be stratified into either Mobility I or Mobility II levels using the information gleaned from the intake assessment. Mobility I will be for those with the least functional mobility and Mobility II will be for those with a higher level of mobility.
  • Participants will be assessed during the intake process using the Lower Extremity Functional Scale questionnaire.
  • The HMP will run 4 times per year (winter, spring, summer, and fall) with 3-10 participants per class (3-10 in each stratification of Mobility I or II).
  • Participation is initiated through a referral form (physician, any allied health professional) which healthcare providers can access here, or simply by contacting us through the Healthy Living Initiative’s email, HLI@saintjohny.ca. Referral Form: click here.

HealthY Living Initiative

Exercise is proven to be one of the most effective and safe ways to prevent and treat many chronic diseases such as heart disease, arthritis, hypertension, diabetes, and more. It's also recognized by the government as critical to our overall health. The HealthY Living Initiative (HLI) is a community health program that is designed to be flexible, adaptable and evidence-based. With a focus on individualized physical activity and education in a fun and social setting, this initiative will help clients:

  • Bridge the gap between healthcare and community by supporting
  • individuals in preventing disease/disease exacerbation;
  • Manage chronic health issues;
  • Transition to and from clinical care.

The HLI model is overseen by qualified exercise professionals and is guided by six principles: client-centred, effective, inclusive, holistic, trusted, and sustainable.

The Vision
To serve the community by responding to unique and pressing health needs in our region by improving health outcomes for all individuals at all stages of life.
