The YMCA of Southwestern New Brunswick is currently seeking volunteers that are strong leaders within our community to become members of our Board of Directors.

Volunteer Position Available - Board of Directors

The YMCA relies on the time and dedication given by volunteers just like you. Every hour spent volunteering with us translates into more smiles and better health for our children, families and communities.

The YMCA of Southwestern New Brunswick is currently seeking strong leaders within our community to become members of our Board of Directors. We welcome and are looking for professional and lived experience that represents our community.

The affairs of the YMCA of Southwestern New Brunswick are managed by the Board of Directors, consisting of 8 to 10 persons. Members of the Board of Directors include a mix of backgrounds, skills and experiences appropriate to guide the Board’s strategy and proper governance of the YMCA.

General Selection Criteria

  • Demonstrate independence, integrity, sound business judgment and leadership skills;
  • Have a reputation for integrity and honesty, the ability to generate public confidence and maintain the confidence of the Y of Southwestern New Brunswick stakeholders;
  • Have strong communication skills;
  • Have developed relationships with business, community and government leaders;
  • Be financially literate or have the potential to become financially literate to a level appropriate for reading and interpreting financial statements of the Y of Southwestern New Brunswick;
  • Have previous Board experience; Be prepared to commit to the Y through time, talent and treasure;
  • Work effectively with others and manage conflict constructively;
  • Have sufficient time to fulfill the responsibilities as a Member of the Board of Directors;
  • Make a financial contribution of personal significance to the Y, to ensure 100% board giving participation annually; and
  • Be willing to donate and assist in the organizations fundraising activities.

Desired Skill Sets

To strengthen the YMCA’s ability to contribute to our vision, the YMCAs Nominations Committee is currently seeking Board nominees for the 2025-2027 term with the following skill sets:

  • Legal Expertise - Experienced lawyer with experience from the not-for-profit sector, contract law, and governance practices including by-laws.
  • Health Professional - Experienced health professional or practitioner in the health system, who has an interest in community health and partnership development.

At the YMCA of Southwestern New Brunswick, we believe unique differences bring value, strengthen our organization, and are essential to build a healthy, inclusive community. Therefore, the Board of Directors will work to achieve and maintain diversity on the Board of Directors through a deliberate commitment surrounding recruitment and ensuing Y committees are diverse. The Y is committed to meeting the Federal 50/30 challenge, that encourages organizations to achieve 50% gender parity (women and/or nonbinary people) and 30% representation of other equity-deserving groups on boards.

Timeline

  • January 30, 2026: Nominations deadline
  • February/March 2026: Interviews with candidates (dates to be determined)
  • April 30, 2026: Board Meeting to approve nomination report
  • May 4, 2026: Successful and unsuccessful candidates are notified
  • May 27, 2026: Annual General Meeting where Members approve the slate

Nominations must be received by January 30, 2026. The term for Board directors elected at the 2026 Annual General Meeting will commence on May 27, 2026. Selected nominees will be asked to complete a criminal record check and the Y volunteer  package.
