A Heartwarming Collaboration: Fundy Men’s Shed and the YMCA South Hub Child Care Centre

The Fundy Men’s Shed, in collaboration with the Saint John Tool Library, recently undertook a meaningful project that brought joy to the children at the YMCA South Hub Child Care Centre. The team focused on revitalizing the playground, which included repairing two playhouses, a bridge, and a wall feature. This project was completed in just a couple of days, demonstrating their commitment and efficiency.

The impact on the children was immediate and profound. The revitalized playground has provided a safe and inviting environment for the children to play and explore. Their excitement was palpable as they eagerly explored the repaired equipment, and the joy on their faces was a testament to the significant difference these caring volunteers have made in their daily lives. The playground now serves as a much-needed recreational outlet, enhancing the children’s overall well-being and happiness.

The collaboration began when the YMCA team reached out to numerous companies and individuals, hoping to repair the playground quickly enough for the children to use it safely. Unfortunately, they were unable to find anyone who could meet their timelines. At this point, Erin Lawlor, the Manager of Marketing and Communications at the YMCA, contacted Brent Harris, Councillor at Large for the City of Saint John and Executive Director of the Saint John Tool Library. Within a week, Brent arranged for the Fundy Men’s Shed Group to visit, and the repairs to the wooden features were completed just a few days later.

The generosity of the Fundy Men’s Shed was overwhelming. They covered the costs of materials, along with the consultation and labour for two days. When the South Hub staff messaged Brent to thank him and inquire about an invoice, he simply responded, “Nope!” This unexpected kindness allowed the YMCA to allocate their funds to other areas in need.

The YMCA plans to recognize the Fundy Men’s Shed and the Saint John Tool Library as part of their 170th-anniversary celebrations, highlighting their work as a non-profit organization committed to improving lives and health outcomes through community projects.

Men’s Shed Canada, the parent organization, is dedicated to improving the lives and health outcomes of men by helping to place “sheds” across Canada. Each shed provides men with unique opportunities to connect and give back to their neighbors and community. The YMCA South Hub Child Care Centre is incredibly grateful for their support and looks forward to continuing this meaningful partnership.
