A Grateful Parent’s Story – Finding Community at YMCA Blacks Harbour

When I first moved to the area, it was just before the COVID-19 pandemic began. Like many others, I found it difficult to meet new people or find ways for my children to get involved in activities. Everything felt uncertain, and isolation made settling into a new community even harder.

Then the YMCA started offering programs in Blacks Harbour.

At first, I was hesitant. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but when the Y launched a month of free programming, I decided to give it a try. I began bringing my kids to as many activities as I could — and it turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve made.

That month changed everything for us. The kids got out of the house, met new friends, and had the chance to explore so many fun and engaging activities — from arts and crafts to science experiments, dance parties, and even beach adventures.

After that first month, we kept going. The programming continued to be a bright spot in our lives, and the Y became a trusted space for our family. The staff have always been incredibly kind, understanding, and helpful, and all three of my kids love the variety of programming the Y offers throughout the year.

Now, every time I put my three-year-old in the car, he immediately asks, “Are we going to the Y?” It’s become a place they look forward to — a place where they feel safe, excited, and included.

As we head into the summer, I’m truly looking forward to what new adventures and opportunities the YMCA will bring for my children. I’m so grateful for the Y and everything they do for families like mine in Blacks Harbour.
