Newcomer Employment Champions
The Newcomer Employment Champions (NEC) Program, developed by the members of Saint John Local Immigration Partnership (SJLIP), supports employers in building inclusive workplaces that attract, hire, and retain newcomer talent. The program offers practical tools, proven best practices, and recognition for employers committed to creating welcoming environments.
Across the region, many businesses continue to face labour shortages. Newcomers represent a strong, often untapped talent pool, bringing valuable skills, global experience, and fresh perspectives. Yet many face barriers to employment, including unrecognized credentials, limited Canadian work experience, language challenges, and cultural differences.
The NEC Program helps employers navigate these challenges with confidence, strengthen their recruitment strategies, and foster workplaces where newcomers & businesses can shine.
About NEC Breakfast Awards
Each year, employers are nominated for one of three Newcomer Employment Champions (NEC) awards and invited to a special recognition breakfast celebrating their commitment to diversity and inclusion in the workplace.
As our community grows and evolves, so do our workforce needs. The NEC Breakfast Awards highlight organizations that are leading the way—champions who recognize the value newcomers bring and who actively create welcoming, inclusive environments where everyone can thrive.
Three award categories are presented annually, with a winner and runner-up selected for each.
