From Kabul to Canada: Zaman’s Journey of Resilience and Belonging with the YMCA

Arriving in a new country as a refugee is a journey filled with challenges—new languages, unfamiliar customs, and opportunities that often feel just out of reach. But for one man who came to Saint John in November 2023, the YMCA became the bridge between uncertainty and hope, helping him rebuild his life and achieve his dreams.
One of our clients, Zaman, arrived in Saint John with a very limited grasp of English. For him, the YMCA became a guiding support, helping him navigate uncertainty and build a sense of belonging in his new home.
His journey of settling into Canada began almost immediately. He arrived under Government-Assisted Refugee (GAR) Program and our Resettlement Assistance Team welcomed him and his family at the airport, providing not only transportation but also temporary accommodation to ensure a smooth transition.
The Our Settlement Workers in Schools (SWIS) team played a pivotal role in supporting Zaman’s family. He helped enroll Zaman’s daughters in school and provided essential resources, including a laptop to aid his daughter’s learning.
Language was one of the biggest barriers Zaman faced, as he had very little knowledge of English. Our YMCA Newcomer Connections team arranged language assessments and enrolled him in the English language classes. Through this process, he not only learned a new language but also connected with teachers and peers, creating a strong support system that made him feel included and valued.
To further improve his conversational English and understanding of Canadian culture, the Y introduced him to a mentor and a Canadian friend. He also participated in the YMCA’s conversation circles, which he described as a space where he could openly share his thoughts and feel a true sense of belonging.
Zaman’s life in Afghanistan had been difficult, and his mental and emotional well-being was a top priority. At the Y, he found a caring community and compassionate staff who provided the encouragement he needed to heal and rebuild his life.
When asked how the YMCA helped him, Zaman shared:
“Being with the Y helped me mentally, physically, and emotionally. The people here are patient and friendly. They always share their experiences and make me feel valued.”
Beyond emotional support, the Y also helped him take practical steps toward self-sufficiency. The employment team worked with him to create a resume and prepare for job opportunities, empowering him to take charge of his future. We are thrilled to share that Zaman has now secured his first job in Canada!
Zaman is an accomplished writer. In Afghanistan, he authored a book that is currently being translated. His experience with the YMCA has reignited his passion for writing, and he is now working on a new book, that chronicles of his struggles and triumphs. Additionally, he expresses his gratitude through poetry in Dari, dedicating heartfelt verses to our staff and volunteers. When translated, his poem reads:
Good people live forever
“I am writing for some of my lovely friends,
Those who are patient and friendly.
I appreciate them because of their effort;
They are always helpful to me.
I admire them. They are the best at the YMCA for immigrants.”
In November 2024, Zaman celebrated his one-year anniversary in Canada—a moment filled with joy and reflection. The YMCA Newcomer Connection team ensured this milestone did not go unnoticed, organizing a special celebration to acknowledge his journey and resilience.
“It’s not just about the programs,” said one of our counselors. “It’s about creating a space where people feel welcome, supported, and a true sense of belonging—where they can thrive and shine through the Y.”
Through the Y, Zaman has found more than just resources—he has found a community. It is a place where he feels seen, heard, and empowered to pursue his dreams.
Today, as he continues learning the English language and prepares for new opportunities, he remains deeply grateful for the Y’s unwavering support. “They changed my life,” he says simply.
This is just one of many stories of resilience and transformation made possible by the Y. Whether through education, employment support, or simply offering a welcoming environment, the YMCA is proud to stand beside newcomers as they write the next chapter of their lives.
