Saint John Community Comes Together for World Refugee Day Walk
SAINT JOHN, NB – On June 20, 2026, community members, partners, and supporters gathered at King Square for a Walk for Refugees in recognition of World Refugee Day. The walk began at 12:30 PM and continued to City Hall, bringing people together in solidarity to honour the strength, resilience, and contributions of refugees in Saint John.
The event was hosted by the Saint John Newcomers Centre, YMCA of Southwestern New Brunswick, PRUDE Inc., CAF i, and ConnexionWorks. The walk offered an opportunity to raise awareness about the refugee experience while celebrating the role refugees play in building a stronger, more welcoming community.
Councillor Garry Sullivan opened the remarks by acknowledging the important role of local agencies in supporting newcomers and refugees. He reflected on the help his own family once received and encouraged Saint John residents to give back by welcoming others and strengthening the community.
Cecilia Que, Interim Executive Director of the Saint John Newcomers Centre said, “This year’s World Refugee Day theme, Until Everyone is Safe, reminds us that millions of people around the world are still seeking protection and a place to call home. It encourages us to continue building communities where everyone feels welcome, valued, and safe.”
Sue Hemmings, Interim General Manager, Newcomer and Community Connections at YMCA of Southwestern New Brunswick, added: “As residents of Saint John, we are fortunate to welcome refugees into our community. Their resilience, courage, and determination inspire us, while their cultures, perspectives, and experiences enrich the fabric of Southwestern New Brunswick. Their stories become part of our shared story, reminding us of the strength found in hope, belonging, and new beginnings. By opening our hearts and standing in solidarity with those seeking safety and opportunity, we are building a stronger, more inclusive community, one where everyone has the chance to contribute, thrive, and help shape a brighter future for us all.”
Akor Nuuk, Director of Finance, Funding & Partnership at PRUDE Inc., said, “Today, we celebrate not only their perseverance but also their contributions. Refugees enrich our communities with their talents, cultures, and experiences. Here in Saint John, they help make our city stronger, more diverse, and more vibrant.”
Kathryn Melvin, representative of the Saint John Local Immigration Partnership representative, said, “At the Saint John Local Immigration Partnership, our mission is to help create a welcoming and inclusive community for newcomers. We know that belonging is built not only through programs and services, but through everyday acts of kindness, connection, and understanding. The SJLIP remains committed to supporting communities where diversity is celebrated, inclusion is intentional, and every person has the chance to belong.”
World Refugee Day is observed around the world to recognize the courage and perseverance of refugees. In Saint John, the annual walk reflects a shared commitment to inclusion, belonging, and support for newcomers as they build new lives in the community.
The organizers thank everyone who took part and encourage the community to continue standing with refugees and supporting a welcoming Saint John for all.
