Volunteers at the Y: Kadian’s Story
When Kadian Carter-Marshall learned about a volunteer opportunity at the YMCA, she didn't hesitate. "I've always wanted to be associated with the Y," she says.
Since joining the YMCA volunteer’s team earlier this year, Kadian has been volunteering with English language classes for newcomers. What began as a desire to give back has become one of the most rewarding experiences.
"The process to sign up was seamless," she recalls. "I signed up online, completed the background check, and was connected with the team. Before long, I was helping in the English language program."
Today, Kadian supports learners in multiple class levels, helping newcomers build confidence in their English skills and navigate life in their new community. While she has experience helping people learn English, she says the YMCA's approach stands out.
"The structure the YMCA uses is phenomenal," she explains. "It feels like being part of a first-class institution that is truly committed to helping people succeed."
For Kadian, the most meaningful part of volunteering is witnessing transformation firsthand.
"When you come in and see how much work newcomers put into learning, it's incredible," she says. "You hear their voices change. You see their confidence grow. You see their reaction when they learn something new."
She compares the experience to watching a caterpillar become a butterfly.
"There's a real transformation happening, and it's amazing to be part of that journey."
One moment, in particular, has stayed with her.
During a class, she noticed a learner struggling to understand a lesson. Instead of moving on, Kadian took a different approach, working one-on-one to explain the concept in a way that made sense.
"Then I saw that expression on their face, the 'aha' moment," she remembers. "That's when you know something has clicked."
Those moments have taught Kadian as much as they have taught her students.
"I've learned to be adaptable and flexible," she says. "It's about slowing down, understanding where someone is at, and helping them feel successful. If they leave having learned even one new thing, that's a win."
"When learners tell you, 'You're a good teacher,' or they stop you in the hallway to say thank you, it does something. It reminds you why you're here."
For anyone considering volunteering, Kadian's advice is simple: "Don't wait."
"Volunteering at the YMCA isn't just about giving your time. You're becoming part of a community that wants to see people grow and succeed. The people you're helping win, but you win too."
Kadian's story is a reminder that volunteers are at the heart of the YMCA. Every hour they give helps create welcoming spaces, build confidence, strengthen communities, and support people as they navigate new beginnings.
