Mother-Daughter Duo Making a Splash at the YMCA
Alexandra Gallant started swimming lessons at the Y when she was 7 years old. She loves learning new skills in the pool.
“I wasn’t a very good swimmer before I came to the Y,” she said. “I have excellent instructors and they help me to achieve my goals.”
Alexandra’s swimming instructors have also inspired her to become an instructor herself someday.
“I think I would like to finish all my levels and take the lifeguarding course someday as well,” she said.
The now 11-year-old is currently in Star 4 at the Saint John Regional Y.
Her mom, Jennifer, is also a member at the Y and shares her time and talents as an Aquafit volunteer.
“Since I was here all the time, some of the staff approached me and encouraged me to take the course and become a volunteer,” Jennifer explained. “I now teach twice a week and love it.”
Jennifer said volunteering is a great way to participate in the community.
“It’s great that the Y trains volunteers and if you are here anyway it’s a wonderful way to give back,” she said.
