Astronomy By The Lake Series

The Glenn Carpenter Centre, in partnership with the Saint John Astronomy Club, is pleased to launch a Summer Astronomy Series.

This series will introduce participants to astronomy through engaging presentations led by experienced specialists and depending on weather conditions, sessions may also include outdoor sky observation and telescope demonstrations.

These sessions will happen every Thursday at the Glenn Carpenter Centre from 6PM- 8PM.
This program is for YMCA members.

Session 2
July 16: The Solar System

Participants will learn:

• The relative sizes and distances of the planets

• Interesting planetary features and moons

• When and how to observe the planets

• What can be seen through a telescope

• About dwarf planets, asteroids, comets and meteors

Session 3
July 23: The Life of Stars

Participants will learn:

• How stars form.

• How stars evolve over billions of years.

• About double stars.

• Variable stars. Star clusters.

• Galaxies.

Session 4
July 30: Astronomy Equipment

Participants will learn:

• Different types of telescopes.

• Basic telescope components.

• How to properly use a telescope.

• How binoculars can be used for astronomical observing.

Session 5
August 6: Astrophotography for Beginners

Participants will learn:

• Basic astrophotography equipment.

• Simple imaging techniques.

• How to photograph the Moon.

• How to capture wide-field images of the night sky.
